On October 17, 2024, Google announced significant updates to NotebookLM, its AI-powered research and note-taking assistant. The changes include enhancements to the Audio Overview feature and the introduction of a business-focused version of the tool. These developments come as NotebookLM sheds its "Experimental" label, signaling a move towards broader adoption and more robust functionality.

NotebookLM, built on Google's Gemini 1.5 AI model, has introduced new controls for its Audio Overview feature. This tool, which generates spoken summaries of uploaded content, now allows users to guide the conversation and adjust the expertise level of the AI-generated discussion.

According to Jason Spielman, Senior Interaction Designer at Google, users can now provide specific instructions before generating a "Deep Dive" Audio Overview. This functionality enables users to focus on particular topics or tailor the content's complexity to suit different audiences.

The update also includes a background listening feature, allowing users to continue working within NotebookLM while the Audio Overview plays. This enhancement enables simultaneous exploration of sources, retrieval of citations, and investigation of relevant quotes without interrupting the audio playback.

To access these new features, users can follow these steps:

  1. Visit the NotebookLM website
  2. Create a new notebook
  3. Add at least one source
  4. In the NotebookLM guide, select "Generate" for an automatic Audio Overview or "Customize" to provide specific instructions for the AI hosts

NotebookLM business pilot program

In a significant expansion of its services, Google has announced NotebookLM Business, a version of the tool designed for enterprises, universities, and other organizations. This new offering will be available through Google Workspace, with enhanced features tailored to business needs.

As of October 17, 2024, organizations can apply for the NotebookLM Business pilot program. Participants will gain early access to new product features, training resources, and email support. Google plans to share more information about general availability and pricing later in the year.

Oliver King, Staff Software Engineer at Google, emphasized that data privacy and security remain top priorities for NotebookLM. The company assures users that their personal data is never used to train the AI model, maintaining a commitment to user privacy.

Growing adoption and future developments

NotebookLM has already garnered significant attention, with over 80,000 organizations currently using the tool. The removal of the "Experimental" label and the introduction of business-focused features indicate Google's confidence in the product's stability and potential for wider adoption.

The tool's core functionality allows users to upload various types of content, including documents, slides, and charts. NotebookLM then uses this information to answer detailed questions, surface key insights, and convert complex material into more digestible formats like FAQs or briefing documents.

Limitations and ongoing development

While the Audio Overview feature represents a significant advancement, it still has some limitations. The AI hosts currently only speak English, and there may be occasional inaccuracies in their explanations. Additionally, users cannot yet interrupt or interact with the audio playback in real-time.

Google acknowledges these constraints and encourages user feedback to improve the feature. The company emphasizes that the generated discussions should not be considered comprehensive or entirely objective, as they reflect only the information provided in the uploaded sources.
